Naegi Castle Ruins

The Naegi Castle Ruins in Japan’s Gifu Prefecture offer a unique glimpse into the feudal past.

Perched on a mountaintop in Nakatsugawa, these ruins are the remnants of a once formidable fortress that oversaw the region 400 years ago.

The castle’s stone walls and layout are emblematic of Japanese castle construction techniques.

After living in Nagoya for 24 years, finding a new place to visit is always a pleasure.

Visiting Naegi Castle Today

We decided to spend a few hours at this historic site before heading to a campsite in northern Gifu.

We drove, parked for free and began the short hike.

The main car park was full, so we had to park in one of the other areas and walk up to the main area.

The hike is fairly easy, and they provide walking sticks if needed.

You will need to climb some steps and walk through a forest as you climb a path.

After a while, the trees clear, and you can view the castle ruins from afar.

Keep walking, and you’ll come to a place to sit down for a break.

Then, take a short walk to the main castle ruins, where you can begin the final climb.

There is a short path to the steps and then you can begin to climb.

It’s an easy short climb and the steps wind around the small mountain until you reach the top.

From there, you can get some great views of Nakatsugawa City and the Kiso River.

If you want, you can climb some more steps to a mini observation deck at the top.
